China has once again demonstrated its prowess in engineering and infrastructure with the completion of the world's largest-diameter underwater shield tunnel in an astonishing 110 days. This remarkable project, located beneath the Yellow River in Shandong Province, marks a milestone in modern construction and innovation.
Engineering Marvel: Shanhe Shield Machine
At the heart of this project lies the Shanhe machine, a cutting-edge shield tunnel boring machine with a massive diameter of 55.8 feet. The Shanhe machine facilitated the construction of a two-mile underwater section by assembling 500 pipe rings. With its superior technology, it enabled an average progress rate of 16–18 meters per day, setting a new global benchmark for efficiency in large-scale tunnel construction.

This tunnel, developed by China Railway 14th Bureau Group, is designed to enhance regional connectivity by linking Jinan's southern urban areas to the northern pilot zone for free trade and innovation.
